Arctic Visitors

Between drifting snow clouds, glimmers of bright moonlight illuminate the jagged black peaks of Greenlands’ mountains. Aside from the lonesome howl of a cold arctic wind, the landscape is quiet. Far to the south, beyond the Atlantic Ocean, a wonderful sound carries across a windswept mudflat. Earlier in the year, the same sound echoed amongst the slopes of those immense Arctic mountains. It is the chatter of a skein of pink footed geese, flying in sharp v formation across the winter sky…

Pink footed geese migrate in family groups, which is how young learn flight paths to overwintering areas. I spent a blustery afternoon in the company of these wonderful arctic visitors earlier on this week.
